Human Resources/Payroll Assistant

The McKinley Plowman (MP+) team is growing fast, and as a result we are on the lookout for an experienced, driven, and enthusiastic Human Resources Assistant who wants to contribute directly to an amazing culture and team dynamic. The successful candidate will play an integral role in the continued growth of the business by consolidating and overseeing all administrative HR tasks across the MP+ group entities.

This is a part-time role, 26 hours p/week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The successful candidate may also be required to be flexible during busy times and per the changing demands of the business.

Who are we looking for?

Reporting to our Finance Manager, the successful candidate will possess the following attributes:

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • A high level of initiative with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Highly developed attention to detail & problem solving ability
  • Formal qualifications not required, however studies in Human Resources or Business Administration will be highly regarded
  • Good working knowledge of employment and payroll legislation and processes
  • Exposure to Payroll systems (desirable)
  • Working knowledge of ADP payroll processing (highly regarded)
  • Proficient and adaptable in the use of modern technology for the purpose of enhancing productivity and efficiency.
  • Good working knowledge of Xero (desirable)
  • Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Office i.e. Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Great communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Confidence in dealing with stakeholders at all levels
  • Flexibility in adapting to changing priorities
  • Confidence in handling challenging situations
  • Willingness to take on new tasks as the business grows
  • Exposure to a professional services environment (highly regarded)
  • Project management experience (desirable)
  • Understanding of payroll legislation and processes

As a part-time role, this opportunity may be ideal for a Human Resources professional looking for something that fits in with school hours. Exact working hours can be discussed and agreed upon with the successful applicant.

What does the job involve?

The successful applicant will be responsible for a range of tasks, including but not limited to:

Human Resources (80%) & Payroll (20%)

  • Fortnightly payroll processing and administration (Experience with ADP highly regarded)
  • Processing payroll journals on Xero
  • Confidential filing and maintenance
  • Manage the onboarding/induction and exit administration processes for employees
  • Maintain electronic HR files for all MP+ employees
  • Maintenance of staff database & leave calendar
  • Responsible for various internal HR-related communications to the wider firm
  • Policies and procedure management, and keeping them updated as legislation changes and business needs dictate


  • Interview administration and communication
  • Preparation of offers of employment & general employee-related correspondence
  • Prepare and post job vacancy advertisements as appropriate

Systems & Processes

  • Maintain HR systems documentation
  • Maintain OH&S registrations
  • Assist Finance Manager to review and implement new systems and processes where appropriate


  • General administration duties as required
